[Discussion] Ukraine Reports Record 54,400 Russian Personnel Losses in October

Ukraine Reports Record Russian Personnel Losses

Russia suffered an estimated 54,400 personnel losses in October 2026, the highest monthly total since its full-scale invasion began in 2022, according to the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. The figure was 8,170 higher than in September.

The reported estimate covers personnel killed, wounded and missing in action. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the figure as Russian troops killed or seriously wounded. He also said Russia lost 2,250 personnel on Oct. 21, the highest single-day total reported during the war.

Ukraine does not disclose its own total losses, citing operational secrecy.

Territorial Changes

Zelensky said Ukrainian forces liberated 96.2 square kilometers of territory during October, while Russian forces occupied 85.8 square kilometers. On that basis, Ukraine regained 10.4 square kilometers more than it lost during the month.

“In October, our Ukrainian Defence Forces inflicted record losses on the enemy and recaptured more territory than the Russian occupiers were able to seize,” Zelensky said.

Ukraine’s General Staff said the reported rate of Russian losses exceeded Moscow’s ability to replenish its units and that each month of fighting was becoming more costly for the Russian military.

Fighting Near Dobropillia

The National Guard’s 1st Azov Corps attributed a significant portion of Russia’s October losses to its offensive near Dobropillia in Donetsk Oblast, one of the main axes of Russian operations.

The corps reported 5,017 Russian troops killed, 1,820 wounded and six captured within its area of responsibility. It also claimed the destruction or damage of five armored fighting vehicles, 47 artillery systems, two multiple-launch rocket systems, 469 vehicles and thousands of fixed-wing and multirotor drones.

The unit said it destroyed or damaged 558 engineering structures, fortifications and command posts. It also reported suppressing 1,071 fixed-wing attack drones and 8,873 multirotor attack drones through electronic warfare.

Unmanned Systems Operations

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces also reported record results for October. Commander Robert “Magyar” Brovdi said his units inflicted 16,796 Russian personnel casualties, averaging 542 per day, or one every 159 seconds. The highest daily figure was 701 on Oct. 24.

Brovdi said the force successfully struck 64,807 targets during the month, averaging 2,091 per day. Its units conducted 255,605 missions, including about 151,500 strike flights and 104,000 reconnaissance flights.

According to Brovdi, 69.49% of the personnel losses attributed to his units occurred along the Dobropillia-Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka and Huliaipole axes. He said the figures covered only Unmanned Systems Forces units and were verified through Ukraine’s Delta situational-awareness system.

Mobilization and Overall Estimates

Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that Russia has lost 1,590,270 personnel since the full-scale invasion began. As Russian losses increase, Moscow faces greater pressure to replenish its forces. Russia announced plans on Oct. 2 to conscript an additional 120,000 people, while Zelensky previously said Moscow intended to mobilize about 300,000 after its September election.

A January 2026 estimate from the Center for Strategic and International Studies placed Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000 from February 2022 through December 2025, including an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed. CSIS assessed that Russian casualties exceeded Ukraine’s by roughly 2-to-1 to 2.5-to-1.
