[Discussion] CENTCOM Forms Task Force Iron Gate to Curb Iran’s Weapons Transfers

CENTCOM Establishes Task Force Iron Gate

U.S. Central Command announced on Nov. 7, 2026, that it is establishing Task Force Iron Gate to support U.S. government efforts to prevent Iran from moving advanced weapons and other materials through ground transit routes.

CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper directed the formation of the team, which will coordinate with other U.S. government agencies on movements across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.

Staffing and Coordination

The task force will consist of approximately 20 civilian and military personnel based in Tampa, Florida. CENTCOM described it as an internal staff supporting ongoing government efforts.

Its coordination work will target the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials, and illegal revenue streams. The announcement did not identify the participating agencies or detail specific interdiction measures.

Stated Objectives

Cooper said the task force is intended to strengthen collaboration between CENTCOM and its U.S. interagency partners. He described that cooperation as an effort to limit Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military.

The release framed the new team as a complement to U.S. maritime enforcement against Iran, with its focus extending to land-border routes and the Caspian Sea.

Maritime Enforcement Context

CENTCOM said the U.S. naval blockade had prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil in recent months. The command did not provide a more specific period for that figure.

According to the release, enforcement at sea continues against all ships entering or departing Iranian ports. The announcement presented Task Force Iron Gate as an additional coordination effort alongside those maritime restrictions.
